Big Horn Sheep Pastel

The reference photograph for this piece featured a big horn sheep standing on a ridge with a blue sky behind. Wanting to showcase the ram’s face, I zoomed in and cropped the image. I also wanted to use a looser style, so I decided to add stylistic contrast with a dramatic, black background to give it a graphic quality. In the ram itself, my goal was to use color, value, and quality of mark to suggest texture and form while bringing out the subtle color and beauty of these amazing animals.
